How Melbourne celebrates
Melbourne rings in the New Year with a midnight fireworks and laser show launched from rooftops across the CBD. The City of Melbourne runs the night, which draws around 500,000 people into the city centre, and the show can be seen from anywhere with a view of the skyline.
In recent years there have been two chances to watch. Families have been able to see a 9.30 pm fireworks display in the free Celebration Zones, at places such as Docklands, Flagstaff Gardens and Treasury Gardens, before the midnight moment, which has run for about eight minutes to a soundtrack.
The Celebration Zones need no booking and are alcohol-free, with fines for breaking that rule. In recent years public transport has been free from 6 pm on New Year's Eve until 6 am on New Year's Day, and the City advises using it because road closures make driving difficult.
