What newyear.onl is

newyear.onl is an independent website. It is not run by, or part of, any city, event organizer, broadcaster or tourism board that it mentions.

The site has a countdown page for each of 37 cities, guides to when New Year is, New Year's Eve, traditions around the world and how to say Happy New Year in other languages, and a page showing where it is New Year right now. Each city page also shows what is known about that city's New Year's Eve event: its status, time and place, how to get in and how to watch.

How the countdowns are computed

Every countdown runs to midnight at the start of January 1, 2027. Which midnight depends on the page.

A city page counts down to midnight in that city's own time zone. The moment is calculated when the page is built, from the city's IANA time zone name (for example America/New_York), and written into the page.

The homepage and the days-until page count down to midnight in your own time zone, which your browser reports.

On the days-until page, the sentence with the number of days left is written by the server for the time zone Cloudflare associates with your connection, or in UTC when it cannot tell, and it names the time zone it used.

Time zones come from the IANA time zone database, whose rules software and operating system vendors use to calculate local time with the correct UTC offset. The UTC offset shown on a page is the offset in force at midnight on January 1, not today's offset, so it is right for cities on summer time at New Year and for places with half-hour or 45-minute offsets. The dates of New Year's Day and New Year's Eve and their weekdays are calculated from the calendar, never typed in by hand.

The countdown reads the clock on your device, so it is only as accurate as that clock. At midnight the numbers stop at zero and the page shows a greeting. They never go negative.

Where the facts come from

Each city page lists the sources behind its event facts, with a link to each one. Sources are chosen in this order: the organizer, the city government or the tourism board first; then a national broadcaster or a major news outlet; then reputable travel press. A blog or an aggregator is never the only source for a fact.

The status of an event is stated in the same few words on every page:

Confirmed — An official source has announced this year's event.

Expected (annual event) — An official source describes the event as annual and nothing suggests otherwise, but this year's edition has not been announced yet.

Not announced yet — The organizer has not announced this year's event yet.

Cancelled — An official announcement says the event will not take place.

No official event announced — No city or organizer runs an official show here. People may still gather, but nobody has announced an event.

When an event is not confirmed, the page says so and shows earlier details as earlier details, for example “Last year: free” or “Traditionally at 00:00”. A fact that cannot be verified is left out rather than guessed.

How facts are re-checked

Every city page shows a Last checked date, the day its event facts were last verified against the sources, and every guide shows a Last updated date. These are content dates, not the date the site was last built, so a date only moves when a page has been checked or changed.

Event plans change, so the statuses are re-checked in December, before New Year's Eve. A page whose event has not been announced says so, and keeps saying so until a source says otherwise.

If you find a mistake, email [email protected] with the page address and, if you can, a link to a source.
