How Hong Kong celebrates

Hong Kong's traditional New Year's Eve celebration is a fireworks display over Victoria Harbour, framed by the dramatic skylines of Hong Kong Island and Kowloon. At New Year 2026 the government cancelled the fireworks after the Tai Po fire, and the Hong Kong Tourism Board held a concert and light show on Chater Road in Central instead.

When the harbour fireworks are staged, the display is choreographed to music; the New Year's Eve show of 31 December 2024 ran for about 12 minutes. The Symphony of Lights — a nightly 8 pm show using more than 40 buildings on both sides of the harbour — is due to be retired in the second half of 2026 and replaced by festival-themed light shows.

In years when the harbour fireworks are held, Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade and the harbourfront on Hong Kong Island are prime viewing spots, filling with hundreds of thousands of spectators.
