How Edinburgh celebrates
Edinburgh's Hogmanay is Scotland's best-known New Year celebration, a multi-day festival in the city its organisers call the “Home of Hogmanay”. It runs from a torchlight procession to concerts in Princes Street Gardens, and the official street party has been held on Princes Street since 1993.
On Hogmanay night, tens of thousands of ticket holders fill Princes Street for live music, DJs, street theatre, pipers and drummers, while a separate ticketed concert takes place beneath the Castle in West Princes Street Gardens. At midnight, fireworks launched from Edinburgh Castle light up the skyline.
Hogmanay — the Scots name for New Year's Eve — became Scotland's main winter celebration after Christmas was officially banned in 1640; Christmas Day only became a public holiday there in 1958. Customs include first-footing, when the first person to enter a household in the new year brings gifts such as coal and whisky, and singing “Auld Lang Syne”.
